Maxine Green said “There are always vacancies: there are always roads not taken, vistas not acknowledged. The search must be ongoing; the end can never be quite known.” To my estimation this is the spirit of teaching. We do have to embrace the search and the questions that are generated along the way. All of them. We need to look again at the commonplace making room for new visions that are novel and unexpected. That is the mind of a young learner, this is why the reading, writing workshop is the heart of my instruction. It is always new – there are always avenues for new thinking – this is what we teachers do.
